What is chenille fabric?

Chenille is thought to have originated in France in the early 18th century, which you might have already realised, as it is a French word, meaning caterpillar. This is because the pattern of the tufted fabric going in alternate directions can look like caterpillars from certain angles.

Like corduroy, chenille is a manmade fabric woven most often from cotton and is known first and foremost for its characteristic look, but also for both its softness and durability.

It boasts an extensive range of uses, but is most popularly used as a fabric for upholstery projects. Used for everything from throws and curtains to cushions and furniture, chenille upholstery fabric is manufactured to be comfortable, light and washable.

As with most fabrics however, it is still susceptible to some level of staining, especially from very strong colours like coffee and red wine.

One of the characteristics of chenille fabric is that it looks different from different angles on account of how it is made. Typically it is manufactured by placing short lengths of yarn or "pile" between two further core yarns, and twisting the collection together, creating a series of right angles throughout the material.

Chenille curtain fabrics

Chenille fabric is a hugely popular choice of fabric to use for curtains. It has a luxurious feel and we make it in a variety of colours, styles and patterns, so it can provide a suitable finish for any window dressings or blinds.

The plain chenille fabric is ideal for those who want to create their own curtain designs with accessories such as tiebacks and pelmets. Alternatively, if you prefer something more simple then there are lots of lovely printed chenille fabrics available in a range of colours, prints and patterns.

Flame Retardant ready options

Fire retardant chenille fabrics are made from a cotton or polyester fabric that has been treated with fire retardants. The fabric is treated to make it flame resistant, which means that the fabric will not easily burn when exposed to fire or other heat sources.

These flame retardant ready options can be used in a variety of applications, and although we have many choices available on site, any chenille fabric found on site can be treated upon request for a reasonable price.

Chenille fabric for furnishing and upholstery

Chenille upholstery fabrics are often used by interior designers because they're easy to work with when making upholstery items like sofas or chairs, as well as curtains and tablecloths.

The pile on these fabrics adds extra warmth and comfort when sitting on them, so they're popular for use indoors during the winter months.
