Brilliant Burgundy

As Autumn draws closer, we see a lot of oranges, reds and browns outside but inside we want a cosy escape from the miserable, cold weather. The best way to create a cosy, warm escape is with your interior design and Burgundy is a brilliant colour to play with. It’s a rich, purple/red colour and, when used correctly, adds a touch of regality to your design.

We love burgundy so much because it is so versatile! It pairs well with greys, browns, beiges and khakis, this means that you can create a tranquil environment without being too dramatic, perfect for a living room or dining room. If you do want to add a little more drama then pair burgundy with black or even navy blue. If you can’t bring yourself to add burgundy to the walls then it can be introduced with accents.

Too much burgundy and the room will begin to look cheap and tacky. Stick to using feature walls or accents to intrigue the eye to certain features of the room. A luxurious pair of curtains can draw your eye to the window, or beautiful textured handmade cushions can bring elegance and cosiness to a room.

Using a range of different textures is a perfect way to create a cosy, inviting environment, who wouldn’t want to snuggle down on a cool Autumn evening under a think woollen blanket and velvet cushions? Play around with textures and fabrics to create the perfect style for your home.

Make windows a focal point with gorgeous window treatments

At Yorkshire Fabric Shop, we love curtains and think that they can be a beautiful focal point of any room (although we may be a little biased) but we know that it can be difficult to decide on the right style and the right pattern for your room.

There are several options for framing your windows, from light lace curtains to roller blinds or shutters; you are sure to find the perfect option for your style. Shutters are great if you want both privacy and light in your room. When it comes to shutters, there are so many choices out there. Some will let you have the shutters either open or closed; others will have independently moving panels, allowing you to control the amount of light entering a room. Make sure that you think about your furniture before you make a purchase though; you need to ensure that you can open your shutters without any furniture in the way. If you’re thinking of putting shutters in the bathroom or the kitchen, just be aware that taps can cause an obstruction too. Beiges, whites and neutral colours are always a safe option as they blend with any colour scheme that you may have chosen, but we always love taking a risk, and bright colours can make a fantastic impact on your room. Don’t forget that your shutters will be visible from the outside too so choose your colour carefully.

Just in time for the colder months, why not us dramatic winter florals for your curtains? This is going to be a big trend for Autumn/Winter and can really make a statement. Rich berry tones add an element of drama to your home, we particularly love our Fiona Embossed Floral Pattern Chenille, our Piccadilly Collection Leaf Floral Fabric and our Purple Floral Design FabricWhen using curtains, think about lining, not only can lining make your curtain feel more high-quality it can help to prevent heat loss by adding an extra layer of insulation.

Why not opt for a solid colour for your curtains? If you want to implement a colour into your room but don’t want to put it on the walls, your curtains can be a great way to showcase this. Curtains add softness to a room while still acting as a focal point. Think about length too, floor-to-ceiling curtains make your ceiling appear much higher. While pooling the curtain on the floor adds elegance and decadence. While we love every single shade, blue is a popular choice, especially for Winter. Blue is a cooler colour so keep a room cosy by teaming it with darker yellows.

Nature is having a huge influence on our interiors, and that includes curtains, but natural doesn’t mean boring, just look at our Ketu Collection Pebble Stone Effect Fabric. Opting for natural fabrics and colours has many more benefits than just looking great, take a look at our blog “Use natural materials to bring tranquillity” to find out more.

We can create beautiful made-to-measure curtains for your home; the difficult part is choosing the fabric! How to: Get your home ready for Autumn

As usual, Summer seems to have only lasted for two weeks this year. Many people will be preparing their Autumn wardrobe but we’re more interested in the Autumn interior trends. From gorgeous reds and oranges, to luxurious velvets and geometric prints, we take a look at the trends that will be transforming our homes this season.

Colour Blocking

We know more than anybody how difficult it can be to choose just one colour, why not choose a selection instead? Colour blocking lets your use a couple of contrasting colours to make an impact. Opt for a natural colour like grey or taupe to prevent the colours overpowering your room. Oranges and blues are always a popular choice in Autumn, and gold is a great accent colour for an Autumnal style.

Teal is a great colour, not only does it add warmth and cosiness to a room but it is an uplifting tone too. Keep the look simple and combine it with white or grey. A deep teal colour brings elegance and luxury while a lighter pastel teal is more calming. Whichever tone you choose, you’ll be right on-trend.

Celebrate Natural

We spoke last week about the benefits of natural fabrics and they are set to take centre stage this Autumn too. Think woven lampshades, thick cosy throws and cotton tablecloths. Off whites, creams and greys are the major colours featured with this trend. Bring in some luscious plant life to add a hint of colour while keeping things natural. If you’re not naturally green-fingered then succulents are a low maintenance option.

One of our personal favourites, geometric patterns add an element of fun to your design. Use geometrics for handmade cushions and accessories. If you’re feeling brave then upholster your furniture or add some structure to your curtains. While geometric patterns are on-trend this Autumn, styles like this will never be out of style.

Emerald Green

Taking more inspiration from nature, emerald green adds a touch of elegance and regality to a room. Combined with copper accessories and blush pinks, you can have a cosy space to escape the Autumn weather. Don’t let the colour overwhelm you though, break it up with prints and patterns in contrasting shades.

The epitome of luxury, velvet is an opulent fabric that brings a touch of elegance to your design. An upholstered piece of furniture adds texture and makes a statement but if you think velvet furniture is too much in your home, velvet cushions are a great option for embracing the trend. Velvet looks great in the traditional Autumnal colours like deep reds, dark oranges and nutty browns.

One of the more surprising colours for Autumn, pink have been popular throughout 2017 and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Peachy-Salmon pink goes with anything, making it suitable for any room in your home. Keep it grown-up and team it with pastel blues and smoky greys. The uplifting effect of pink will combat any Autumn sadness!

At Yorkshire Fabric Shop, we absolutely love pattern and colour and we’re excited to see how our clients will decorate their homes! We have thousands of unique fabrics that are just perfect for Autumn. You can search our great range online or visit or warehouse, don’t forget that we offer FREE samples too.
